By ANONYMOUS EMPLOYEE OF MARC EMERY – CANNABIS CULTURE
This last week has been a big one for the Cannabis Community. We have had well known figures at both ends of the country outed for improper and illegal behaviors that made victims of those within our community.
It is enough to break this moms heart into pieces to know the community I love has been used by predators as their hunting grounds.
But, I am guilty too. I have helped enable these monsters that walk among us.
For years, I worked within the forums of Cannabis Culture mediating and administering the forums owned by Jodie and Marc Emery. I have heard the whispers. We all have. I have had women tell me directly online, and to my face, stories of a man and woman who’s sexual activities were something shameful and even illegal. Somehow, I was able to shake off these disturbing stories believing instead, what I was told. “oh she is angry because I fired her”, “They are jealous because we have accomplished so much”
While I never doubted that the pain these women felt was real, It always seemed to be mixed with a bit of sour grapes. Controversial people tend to invite, controversy. I kept my head down, kept my eye on the prize of legalization, and kept working.
To be clear: I have never partied with the Emery’s or at CC with the rest of their core group. I am not much of a partier – with 4 children – partying is my least significant priority. Perhaps if I had attended an event or two thrown by the Emery’s, I would have realized (and likely had plenty to say) about what goes on after hours when the scrutiny of the media had gone to sleep for the night.
I had no direct, first hand knowledge or experience with the Emery’s outside of the work I did for them. They were never my friends. We didn’t ‘hang out’. They were just ally’s in a war that was tearing families apart, hurting patients and children.
Today I see them not as ally’s but as a sick couple who have used this culture, and this movement as their hunting grounds and as a means to support themselves and gain notoriety.
In my defending them for the years I enabled these monsters to continue to prey on our people. In my silence about things I had been told and the rumours that floated by, I helped them get away with it.
For this, I am truly sorry. Regret is a powerful thing. I regret not looking deeper into the accusations the first time I heard them. I regret defending the Emerys as often as I did. I regret that I in any way, shape, or form made it easier for them to hurt and harm so many.
For this, I am truly sorry. I am ashamed of my lack of courage.
For what its worth, I am listening NOW. I hear you NOW. I stand with you NOW. The incredible courage of the women who have come forward deserves not only my respect, but my support.
It is time for cannabis culture – The REAL cannabis culture (NOT the business) – Cleaned house of the predators, and creeps. The charlatans and the manipulators. There are plenty among us. Watch as they run and scatter in the days ahead as these truths become known and validated. Some are already running.
To my activist friends and ally’s out there, I encourage you to seek answers, and burn some bridges.
To those activists who were a part of their inner circle and should be reasonably aware of what was going on – I will keep my eyes open for YOUR apology to these woman who have been harmed by the actions of the Emery’s.
To my journalistic friends I encourage you to dig deep and tell the story, but please, be sure you get the story right. This is a story of an underground movement of people who have been forced to work in the shadows on account of the legal status of an often life saving herb. That illegality has made us vulnerable to those who are truly harming others whether it be financial scammers, manipulators, or the deeply perverted.
The media crowned them our prince and princess. We did not. The media gave them power. We did not. You wanted a story, but you got it wrong.
Pot people are not sexual deviants, nor are we pedophiles. We are (normally) courageous beings fighting for YOUR right to use a medicine that has for many of us, returned us to a quality of life we never expected we would have again. Our work is about compassion and truth.
It is my deep desire that we return to that and leave the media hungry predatory wolves at the door.
Mel Kalashnikova It’s pretty clear that publicly stated opinions about women are enough to classify this “poor old man” as a complete douchebag. I’m not really sure, once again, why pro cannabis folks need a court hearing to call something “legit”.
There’s enough straight out of the horses mouth, without dragging victims through a court system that crucifies rape and harassment victims all year long without an ounce of regret or shame.
Melvin Bond She’ll be fine though, as she’s already got her little red-headed bitch of a boyfriend on tap. Of course, if Marc finds some way to get his property back while also keeping the government from taking it for HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS in unpaid income taxes…he probably wont be that interested in her then.
The theory behind the scenes is that he’s seriously screwed himself by giving her legal title to everything he owned to protect it form government confiscation, and to keep his business generating income while he was getting the US government to give him free room and board and telling the world what a martyr he was. If he tried to get rid of her NOW, he’s never get his property from her, so he’s playing his usual game of “manipulate the lackey” until she signs all of “his stuff” back to him, then he’ll kick her to the curb.
We’ll see. But there are some VERY interesting speculations about how, and how soon, it’ll all go down. (Most of the scuttlebutt was that it would take two to three years after he got out of prison…)
